Kerrang! magazine: We fact checked Lords of Chaos…

To coincide with the UK release of Lords of Chaos, an article published by Kerrang! Magazine states that after fact checking Lords of Chaos they found “some pretty big errors”. They talk about various aspects of the film, events and history which includes this introduction:

There’s no Brexit, but what is definitely happening today is the UK theatrical release of Lords Of Chaos, Jonas Åkerlund’s tackling of the story of Norwegian black metal. While the director’s attention to detail when it comes to shirts, stickers, posters and settings has been widely praised, the film’s declaration that it is “Based on truth and lies” is an open admission that some elements of the story have been treated with a level of artistic license.

There are so many so called “facts” out there that it’s hard to tell what actually happened since we as an audience weren’t there for what transpired. There’s much hearsay and each person involved will also have their own perception of what went on. I think we should take the film for what it is, not claiming to be a 100% accurate depiction but as stated at the very beginning of the film – and as referenced by Kerrang! – it’s based on truth and ‘lies’. We know that Jonas Åkerlund has said repeatedly that the film humanises the key characters so is a different take on what’s come before. It’s not a documentary like ‘Until The Light Takes Us’, it’s not a word for word re-telling of events, it just is what it is. We should watch it with an open mind and enjoy the characters, the story, the music and visuals of the film.
